My
Experience Raising Cichlid Fry
When I began
keeping African cichlids, it was not with the intent of breeding and
raising cichlid fry. Mother Nature takes her course and before long
I was learning about stripping eggs, egg tumblers and feeding cichlid fry.
(I just grind the spirulina flakes to a fine powder between my fingers and
the fry will eat this up.)
After a many phone
calls, I found two locally owned pet shops that would take 1.5 - 2 inch
cichlids in exchange for store credit. It certainly helped to offset
the costs associated with the hobby. The pet stores were
particularly interested in the peacocks.
After I learned
this, I only would strip eggs to maximize the survival rate of the
peacocks. Although, it has always been difficult for me to allow
nature to take its course with any fry in an aquarium.
If you are just
starting out with cichlids, I encourage you to check out the
Cichlid Forum. I have
spent countless hours on their website. It is a great source of
information for anyone raising cichlids. In addition, I purchase my
original sunshine peacocks and an egg tumbler from other members of the
forum.
