My
Experience Keeping and Breeding Yellow Labs
Yellow Labs have
always been a standard in all of my mbuna tanks. The are not nearly
as aggressive as some of the other mbunas and I have always enjoyed the
color they bring to the tank. As with all mbunas, they are
vegetarians and require a rocky environment with plenty of hiding places.
As can be seen in
the pictures above, I keep these cichlids with peacocks and have no
problems. I also keep them with more aggressive cichlids. With
the proper environment, this will not be a problem.
Crushed coral is
the preferred 'gravel' for Lake Malawi cichlids. This helps to
maintain the hard water conditions required for these fish. I
usually keep it at least 2 inches deep, because they love to dig it up and
move it around. In addition, have plenty of rocks and caves for them
to hide.
Feeding yellow
labs
is the same as for other mbunas. A diet of high quality spirulina flakes and fresh
vegetables like lettuce will be just fine. I use a veggie clip that
suctions to the side of the tank to feed them Boston or Romaine lettuce.
You can experiment with other veggies as well.
Breeding these mbunas is
quite simple. If you provide a healthy environment and a proper
diet, you will soon have a female with a mouth full of eggs. |
